                       Dust of Snow'

                                                                                                        by Robert Frost

Summary

'Dust of Snow' is only eight lines long and seems to be the simplest of short poems. With full end rhyme and short lines, on the surface the two stanzas appear to be nothing more than a snapshot of a trivial event concerning a crow, a tree, snow and a human being.

Yet, as always with Robert Frost, you know that beneath the surface there will develop deeper worlds of meaning and possibility. As Frost himself wrote:

👉 'Dust of Snow' has as its main themes:

  • communication between nature and humans
  • nature healing and helping with negative human emotions
  • the significance of small natural events
👉 Summary/Theme/Central Idea

Dust of snow summary by Robert Frost. It illustrates the extraordinary curative power of nature and trivial things in life. Nature cures everything whether it is awful mood or illness. The author is experiencing one such bad day when a crow’s movement near hemlock dusted snow upon him. The snow instantly makes him happier. His day gets tons better. The supremacy of nature made him realise his problems are petty. The fact that hemlock is poisonously combined with crow being the indicator of doom and fear is utilized in the poem because the carrier of happiness within the lifetime of the narrator is ironical. The poet tries to spotlight that sometimes creatures link with negative aspects of life often bring change and happiness. Being outdoors in nature, with all its unpredictability can benefit anyone, anywhere at any time.

👉     Dust of Snow Summary in Detail

It is winter season and the poet is in a bad mood sitting quietly under the hemlock tree covered all over the snow. On spur of moment, a crow sitting on the branch of the tree shakes the tree, and the snow from tree falls on the poet. The snow is cold and velvety to touch which changes the poet’s mood from bitter to elate. This fills him with a refreshing feeling. This moment was very compelling and saves his day from disappointment. The black crow usually symbolizes bad omen and emblem of death and fear. Since the crow is not related to goodwill, it is ironic that during this poem he did an honest deed by shaking off the snow.

Robert Frost did not prefer to use any other trees like oak, maple or pine. He chose the hemlock which is typically related to poison and toxicity. Similarly, he uses dust which is useless to anybody and nobody wants to be liking dust. But the poet uses it as an impulse that brings positive thoughts in mind. Anyway, the alluring snow that adorns the poisonous hemlock tree’s branches is shaken off by a scary crow. We have toxic hemlock covered in pure, white snow, and a person who is depressed, getting to kill himself and walking under the tree. The black crow throws the snow on the poet. The feels of pure cold snow alter his mind about sacrificing his life. On the contrary, he decides to forget the regrets of his life and sorrow to follow the path of healing of the inner soul.

This poem conveys the message that nothing in life is small. Even trivial things can bring positive changes in our life. In addition to this, it also shows that if we take things positively in life, situations do change for better. Even the small help or good gestures we do for others make large differences. Just believe those random acts of kindness we do and the way they brighten a person’s day, and sometimes change their future. Noticing and appreciating all the tiny things in life will make our life happier.

Fire and Ice

👉Central Idea of the Poem

`Fire and Ice’, is an extremely compact little lyric. Not a syllable is wasted. The theme of the poem is the age-old question. The question is whether the world will end in fire or in ice. The poet decides that any of the two options would achieve its purpose sufficiently well. The poet shares the common belief that everything that exists will have its end too. People are divided on this issue. Some think that the natural element of fire will cause the destruction of this world. Others believe that ice will be the cause of the end. Putting in terms of human emotions, the element of ‘fire’ stands for passions, desires and love. Unbridled passions and desires can cause the end of the world. The poet has experienced both these emotions. It doesn’t matter how the world will end. Even hate born out of cold and icy reason is sufficient to cause destruction and the end of the world.

👉DETAILED SUMMARY

‘Fire and Ice’ is a symbolic poem by Robert Frost. The poet wants to aware the humanity that everything will end one day as a result of human misdeeds’. The poet says that both fire and ice are destructive. Fire  of violent desires will put the world to an end. If the world had to perish twice then it will be-perished by-.  the hatred between man and man. Ice has been presented as a symbol of hatred.

👉DETAILED SUMMARY (2) :

1.End of the World: It is certain that this world will come to an end. The poet shares the belief of the people that everything that exists now will end sooner or later. The poet deals with a very sublime subject — the end of the world.

2. Two Different Beliefs: The poet talks about the two different beliefs regarding the end of this material world. Some say that this world will ‘end in the fire’. The world will be reduced to a fireball in the end. There are others who think that this world will end in ice, freezing all kinds of life into death and destruction.

3. Poet’s View: The poet sides with those who believe that this world will end in fire. The poet links these two very powerful elements of nature to human emotions and human behaviour. ‘Fire’ is a symbol of human passions.

The fire also stands for unbridled desires. Uncontrolled passions of love and desire will be the cause of the destruction of this world. Uncontrolled fire and untamed passionate desires will certainly bring an end of this world. The poet confesses that he himself has ‘tasted of desire’. So, he is quite aware of the potential of unbridled passions and fire of the love of causing death and destruction

A Tiger in the Zoo

By– Leslie Norris

👉Summary in English- A Tiger in the Zoo

DETAILED SUMMARY

In this poem, Leslie Norris has given an appropriate description of a tiger. This poem contrasts a tiger in the zoo in his cage with the tiger in its natural habitat. The poem moves from the zoo to the jungle, and back again to the zoo. The poet sees a tiger full of rage but quiet, moving in his cage in a starry night. The poet feels that the tiger should have been moving freely in the forest and hunting at his will. But now he is locked in a concrete cell behind the bars. At night he watches stars with his brilliant eyes and longs for freedom.

DETAILED SUMMARY (2) :

1.Walks in Quiet Rage: The dweller of the forest is forcefully put in a cage. The tiger is caged in a zoo. There, in his artificial habitat, he walks in quiet rage. The stripes on his body are very distinct and can be easily seen. The stripes are darker in colour than the rest of his coat. The tiger moves very softly and quietly with his ‘pads of velvet’. But the range of his movement is limited. He goes on moving around within the confines of his cage. The tiger doesn’t relish the stares of the onlookers in the zoo. His rage or anger is suppressed.

2. He Should Have Been in his Natural Habitat: The poet means that the zoo is not the rightful place of the tiger. He is a denizen of the jungle. His real place is in the wild. Had he been in the wild, he would have been lurking around in shadow. He must have been sliding quietly through the long grass to ambush his kill. He should be using the long grass and shadows as necessary covers to keep his movement undetected. He would know where he could get his favourite hunt — the plump deer. He should approach the waterhole quietly where animals and deer come to drink water.

3. Terrorising the Village: Had the tiger been in the forest, sometimes he would stray into human settlement. He would stray around the outskirts of the village. These human settlements are at the jungle’s edge. On seeing the villagers he would open his long sharp teeth and claws to terrorise the residents. But it would be just a show of power and strength to the villagers. He would have no intention of killing the villagers and entering their houses. The poet tries to say that generally the tiger never attacks till he is highly provoked. Killing is not his hobby but only the necessity of his food.

4. Alas, the tiger is not in his natural habitat—the wilds: Unfortunately, he is locked in a concrete cell of a zoo. His powerful and strong body is of no use to him as he is put behind the bars. His movements have been limited. He is continuously moving about the length and breadth of his cage. He doesn’t relish the curious stares of the visitors. He simply ignores their presence.

5. Remains Awake till Late at Night: The poet describes how the day ends for the tiger. He doesn’t go to sleep until the late hours of the night. He hears the sound of the cars of the zoo official patrolling at night. The stars shine brightly in the sky and so do his brilliant eyes at night. He is constantly looking at the brilliant stars. Alas, he watches the brilliant stars only behind the bars of his cage.

👉Style of A Tiger in the Zoo-

The poem consists of 5 stanzas, each is made up of 4 lines. The rhyme scheme is: abcb; abcb; abcb; abcb; abcb. The poem has two distinct settings. The first setting is that of the zoo where the tiger is put in a cage. The second setting is that of the natural wild habitat of the tiger which should have been his real place. The personification of the tiger is evident as the poet calls him ‘he’, and not ‘it’. The metaphor ‘pads of velvet’ is used effectively in the third line of the first stanza. The tense tone represents the hidden rage of the tiger.

                       The Ball Poem

👉Central Idea

The central idea of the poem The Ball Poem is that every person tries to possess things. He feels as if the things which he possess will always remain with him. However he has to lose them one day and bear the pain of its loss.

A person gets attached to his possessions and thus when he loses them, he feels depressed and sorrowful. The poet says that we have to accept this harsh reality and also try to move on because it is useless to cry over spilt milk. We cannot bring back the things which we lose. So we should always move on.

👉Theme

Loss of innocence:

For the little boy in this poem, his ball is the first thing he has ever held dear. However, he has never even considered the possibility that he might one day lose his ball. It is only when he realizes that it is his responsibility to keep the ball safe that he has failed. The boy quickly realizes that everything he will ever own will be his responsibility. He also realizes that things will get lost from time to time, and money cannot replace them. As he is learning these lessons, he is growing up. He will never again be as innocent as he was before the loss of his ball. He will never be naive enough not to feel the pressure of his responsibilities. This is an excruciating thing for the poet to watch.

Loss of a loved one:

This poem has a surface meaning as well as a deeper meaning. If we read between the lines, we will see that the ball symbolizes our family or friends whom we love, and the loss of the ball symbolizes their death. As we grow older, we will become more and more accustomed to seeing our loved ones die. We will learn how to deal with such a loss and move on from it as well. Death may grieve us or cause us to feel depressed, but sooner or later, we must overcome those feelings and start living our normal lives again.

👉Summary

The Ball Poem Summary –

The poet is talking about a little boy who has lost his ball. He was playing with his ball. The ball skipped from his hand and went into the nearby water body. The poet says that this sight of the boy losing his favorite ball made him think about the boy and his reaction to this situation. He further says that the boy was helplessly looking into the water where his ball had gone. He was sad and was trembling with fear. He got so immersed in his sorrow that he kept standing near the harbour for a very long time and kept on looking for his ball. The poet says that he could console him that he may get new balls or he could also give him some money to buy another ball. But he stops himself from doing so because he thinks that the money may bring a new ball but will not bring the memories and feelings attached to the lost ball. He further says that the time has come for the boy to learn his responsibilities. Here the poet wants to say that now the boy will learn the toughest lesson of life. The lesson of accepting the harsh realities of life that one day we will lose our loved ones and our loved things.

                                          Amanda

👉Summary of the Poem Amanda –

The poem describes a girl named Amanda and her mother who is nagging her for her mistakes. She is first pointed out most probably by her mother for biting her nails and for not sitting in the right posture. The mother also feels that Amanda sits in a very lazy manner. To this, Amanda imagines herself as a mermaid who lives a calm and relaxing life in the beautiful green sea. Further, she is nagged for not cleaning her room and shoes and also for not doing her homework. She then imagines herself to be an orphan because she is now fed up of being watched by her parents continuously. She says that she would have enjoyed her freedom then, by making the patterns of her bare feet on the sand and would live a peaceful life. Next, Amanda is scolded for eating too many chocolates as this causes pimples. She is also scolded for not listening to her mother. So, now Amanda thinks of being Rapunzel, a character from a fairy tale and wants to live in a huge tower like her. In the tower she will be alone and will live a peaceful life and will never allow anyone to come in. Finally, the mother asks her to stop being moody because she doesn’t want anyone to blame her for harassing her daughter. At this time the poet has not written any reaction from Amanda’s side. This constant nagging has made her so sad that she has even stopped to imagine herself as someone else. She used to do so in order to escape from the continuous harassment and dominance of her parents.

👉Central Theme

The central theme of the poem is the upbringing of a child. While it is important for parents to teach their children what is right and wrong and instil good manners in them, they also need to be sensitive towards the wishes of the child. In the poem, Amanda is constantly being scolded and nagged by a parent for even trivial things like eating chocolates. Amanda deals with this unpleasant situation by escaping into an imaginary world where she is alone and free. The poem gives the message that parents should not restrict their children’s freedom to such an extent that they feel suffocated.

                   How to Tell Wild Animals

👉Summary

The poet is describing the various wild animals in a very interesting and mysterious way. These animals are very dangerous, but poetess is introducing them one by one in a very funny way. First of all, she tells us about the Asian lion. She says that if you are visiting the jungles of the east and there we see an animal that has tawny skin and may roar that we may die out of fear. It means we saw an Asian lion. Next, she explained the Bengal tiger as a royal animal that at once attacks and kills a man. She says in a humorous way that if this beautiful black striped animal kills us and eats, then we have surely met a Bengal tiger.

After this, she says that if we met an animal with black-spotted skin and it at once jumps on him, then it is a leopard. Also, she says that if one will cry out in pain, then it may be of no use as the leopard will not stop attacking him. Then she introduces the bear that she says will hug very tightly. Because in this way bear may kill a person by hugging him very tightly.

Further, she asks a question to the readers that do we know the way of recognizing beasts that hunt their prey. Then she explains about hyenas having a smiling face always and the crocodiles which have tears in their eyes. It is quite visible when they are killing their prey. Lastly, in the list of animals, she introduces the Chameleon. She says that it is a lizard type creature which doesn’t have ears and wings just like a lizard. Only this information can help us to differentiate between a lizard and chameleon. She further says that the chameleon has a quality of changing its colour as per the colour of its surrounding and surface.

Therefore, to explain this she says that if we look at the tree and if we are seeing the tree only, then certainly it means that there is a chameleon sitting on it. And it has already turned its colour to brown just like the branch of the tree.

The Trees (Adrienne Rich)

👉Central Idea of the Trees

The poem The Trees by Adrienne Rich shows the conflict between man and nature with the growth and development of the society, human beings have used nature for their own benefit and caused a lot of harm to natural environment. The poetess wants to give the message that the presence of few trees inside our homes does not give us the feeling of nature She suggests here that the trees and plants used in interior decoration are as imprisoned Real nature is outside, in the forest that we have destroyed. The poem tells us how the trees want to break free from the walls that humans have put around them and go out into the forest. The poetess says that everything has a deep desire of freedom. It is necessary for growth and well-being so, we must follow the laws of nature.

👉Summary

The poet talks about trees symbolically. They refer to women who have been healed and are ready to move out of their houses to fulfil their primary purpose – to renew the forest of mankind. As women have remained indoors, the forest has become empty, the birds and insects rendered shelterless. The Sun’s rays do not have the tree trucks and leaves to fall upon and thus, reach the earth. She says that the forest will be full of trees the next morning. The roots of the trees are working hard to separate from the floor of the veranda where they have remained fixed. The leaves and branches are moving towards the glass windows. They are desperate to move out just like a newly discharged patient who has not recovered completely, moves to the exit door of the hospital in a hurry. The poet is sitting in her house with the doors of the veranda open. She is writing letters but does not mention this movement of the trees. It is night time, the sky is clear and a bright moon is visible. She can smell the leaves and lichen which seem to be calling out desperately. She hears the glass of the window pane breaking. The trees are moving out and the fast blowing wind embraces them.  As the trees have reached the forest, the tall and strong oak tree overshadows the moon and it seems that the moon has been broken into several pieces.

                                Fog

 👉Central Idea

Central idea of the poem Fog is that nature is alive. The poet compares the movement of fog with that of cat. According to him, the fog comes silently like cat on its little feet (without making any noise). After coming, it sits looking over the city as well as dock and does not make any movement. Finally it goes way silently like the cat. Hence the fog is independent like the cat and patient as well.

👉Summary of the Poem

The poet says that the fog which is generally seen during the winter season is coming towards the city and the harbour just like a cat. This means that it is approaching the city in a very silent manner so that no one can notice its arrival. He has compared its arrival to that of a cat because a cat always enters a place silently. Next he says that the fog has covered the whole of the city and harbour and it appears as if it is sitting by folding its legs and looking around just the way a cat does when it sits on the haunches and looks around. At the end, he describes the departure of the fog which very silently and unpredictably, again, similar to the departure of the cat, vanishes.

👉                        Themes

Conventional ideas of beauty:

The idea of “beauty” is a cultural conception or one that has been created by human beings themselves. That is why this idea is very one-dimensional and unchanging. It is believed that women with lighter hair (and lighter skin, though that is not the issue here) are beautiful, whereas women with darker hair are ugly. This idea is so pervasive that everyone takes it for granted and believes in it blindly. Even Anne Gregory thinks the same way about beauty. She believes that if she dyes her hair black or brown or red, then she will look ugly, as opposed to her naturally blond and honey-colored tresses that make her look beautiful. However, the poet gives us an alternate idea of beauty, he tells Anne that since is a beautiful person on the inside, she cannot look ugly even if she wants to. That is, beauty exists within us and not outside. However, we do not see Anne responding to the poet’s unconventional idea of beauty in this poem. Hence, we do not know if his idea has been accepted by her.

👉Men judge only by outer appearance:

Throughout the poem, the poet has made a critique of men. By repeatedly telling Anne that men love her only for her yellow hair, he has made it clear that men judge women only by their physical appearance. They never look beyond women’s appearance and try to get to know women for their personality or their inner beauty. However, the poet believes that this is very wrong. He feels that men should get to know who women are on the inside, and appreciate them for the same. He knows who Anne really is, and that is why he can assert that she is a beautiful person on the inside. He only hopes that some other man of her own peer group will also appreciate the same qualities in Anne that he sees in her, but he also knows that this is unlikely to happen.

👉Universal truth told by a wise man:

The “old religious man” that the poet mentions in the last stanza are the embodiment of wise men. These are men who are very learned, and who know all there is to know about this world. The poet’s man is also very well read, and in fact, in one manuscript he has read that only God loves a woman for more than her physical appearance. Of course, the poet does not mean that such a manuscript exists literally. What he means is that it is a universal truth that no man can judge a woman by anything other than her looks. Moreover, it is only God who knows people for what they really are. God also knows that Anne is a beautiful person, and therefore, God loves her for her sweet and kind nature rather than her good looks.
